    High-dose estrogen treatment in adolescent girls with familial tall stature caused significant weight gain, primarily in the first year. This weight gain could not be predicted before treatment and did not correlate with initial body mass.

    Background:

    • Familial tall stature is a condition where children are genetically predisposed to be significantly taller than average.
    • Estrogen therapy is sometimes used in adolescent girls to reduce predicted adult height by accelerating bone maturation.
    • Weight changes are a potential side effect of hormonal treatments in adolescents.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of high-dose estrogen treatment on weight gain in adolescent girls with familial tall stature.
    • To determine the pattern and predictability of weight changes during estrogen therapy for height reduction.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 36 adolescent girls with familial tall stature received high-dose estrogen treatment.
    • Weight and height were monitored over the treatment period.
    • Weight gain was analyzed in relation to treatment duration and initial anthropometric measurements.

    Main Results:

    • Mean weight gain was 9.0 +/- 3.6 kg during the first year of treatment.
    • The most significant weight velocity occurred within the first 6 months, particularly the initial 5 weeks, likely due to water retention.

    • Weight gain associated with long-term estrogen treatment in this cohort is difficult to predict quantitatively before initiating therapy.
    • Adolescent girls with familial tall stature undergoing estrogen treatment do not necessarily gain more weight based on their initial body composition (heavy/fat vs. light/lean).
    • Estrogen therapy for height reduction requires careful monitoring for potential weight changes.
