Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression was found in 60% of urinary bladder carcinoma cases. This finding suggests PD-L1 may help identify patients who could benefit from targeted immunotherapy for aggressive bladder cancer.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Immunology
- Pathology
Background:
- Urinary bladder carcinoma is a significant health concern.
- Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) is an immune checkpoint protein implicated in tumor immune evasion.
- Understanding PD-L1 expression is crucial for developing targeted therapies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) immunohistochemical expression in various urinary bladder carcinoma variants.
- To correlate PD-L1 expression with clinicopathological features of bladder cancer.
Main Methods:
- A retrospective study of 70 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded urinary bladder carcinoma specimens.
- Immunohistochemical staining using anti-PD-L1 antibody.
- Analysis of PD-L1 expression in relation to age, gender, and tumor type (noninvasive vs. infiltrating).
Main Results:
- Positive PD-L1 expression was detected in 60% (42/70) of the cases.
- No significant association was found between PD-L1 expression and age, gender, or histopathological type.
- The majority of specimens were from non-Hispanic white males with infiltrating bladder carcinoma.
Conclusions:
- Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression is prevalent in urinary bladder carcinoma.
- PD-L1 may serve as a predictive marker for aggressive bladder cancer.
- Immunohistochemical assessment of PD-L1 could guide patient selection for targeted immunotherapy.
