Summary

This study shows that central aortopulmonary shunts using polytetrafluoroethylene grafts are a safe and effective technique for improving blood flow in infants with cyanotic congenital heart defects.

  • Cyanotic congenital heart defects (CCHDs) often involve hypoplastic pulmonary arteries, requiring surgical palliation.
  • The central aortopulmonary shunt is a surgical technique used to improve pulmonary blood flow in these complex conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the central aortopulmonary shunt technique using a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) graft.
  • To assess the impact of this procedure on pulmonary artery growth and systemic oxygenation in infants with CCHDs.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 10 pediatric patients (mean age 4.3 months) who underwent central aortopulmonary shunt with a PTFE graft between January 2019 and June 2022.
