Background:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) impacts social interaction and development.
The role of pets in the lives of children with ASD is an area requiring further exploration.
Understanding play interactions can provide insights into therapeutic benefits.

Purpose of the Study:

To qualitatively explore the play interactions between children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their pets.
To identify themes related to how children with ASD play with pets and the associated developmental impacts.

Main Methods:

Secondary qualitative analysis of video recordings (115 minutes) of children with ASD playing with pets.
Thematic analysis of transcripts from eight caregiver interviews.
Coding of play interactions and caregiver-reported themes.

Main Results:

Six codes were identified, forming three main themes: diverse ways children with ASD play with pets, pet play supporting child development, and benefits derived from pet play for children with ASD.
Findings indicate that playing with pets may foster responsibility and social skills in children with ASD, particularly in their interactions with animals.

Conclusions:

Pet play may offer significant developmental benefits for children with ASD, including enhanced social skills and responsibility.
Further research is recommended to explore perspectives of families without pets and adults with ASD to gain a comprehensive understanding.
