Evaluation and management of irritable bowel syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common diagnosis that providers encounter in primary and specialty care. IBS is characterized by chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. The American College of Gastroenterology recently released an updated guideline for the evaluation and management of patients with IBS. According to the guideline, it remains important to confirm diagnosis based on criteria and lack of alarm signs; IBS should not be a diagnosis of exclusion. Management should be focused on addressing altered bowel habits and global symptoms using a multidisciplinary approach.
