The Retina01:32

The Retina

The retina is a layer of nervous tissue at the back of the eye that transduces light into neural signals. This process, called phototransduction, is carried out by rod and cone photoreceptor cells in the back of the retina.
Genomics02:02

Genomics

Genomics is the science of genomes: it is the study of all the genetic material of an organism. In humans, the genome consists of information carried in 23 pairs of chromosomes in the nucleus, as well as mitochondrial DNA. In genomics, both coding and non-coding DNA is sequenced and analyzed. Genomics allows a better understanding of all living things, their evolution, and their diversity. It has a myriad of uses: for example, to build phylogenetic trees, to improve productivity and...
Confocal Fluorescence Microscopy01:16

Confocal Fluorescence Microscopy

Confocal microscopy is an advanced microscopic technique. The prime advantage of the confocal microscope over other microscopy techniques is its ability to block the out-of-focus light from the illuminated samples using pinholes. It is widely used with fluorescence optics to obtain high-resolution, sharp contrast images. Unlike optical microscopes, confocal microscopes use a focused beam of light laser to scan the entire sample surface at different z-planes. These microscopes are, therefore,...
Glaucoma: Overview01:25

Glaucoma: Overview

Glaucoma is an eye condition characterized by increased intraocular pressure that damages the retina and optic nerve, leading to irreversible blindness if left untreated. The human eye has various components, including the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, and optic nerve. Aqueous humor is secreted by the epithelium of the ciliary body in the posterior chamber and flows through the trabecular meshwork and canal of Schlemm, maintaining normal intraocular pressure. The trabecular meshwork and the canal...
Open Angle Glaucoma: Treatment01:27

Open Angle Glaucoma: Treatment

In open-angle glaucoma, the iridocorneal angle remains open, but the trabecular meshwork becomes stiff, slowing down the outflow of aqueous humor. This causes a buildup of aqueous humor in the anterior chamber, leading to a sudden increase in intraocular pressure. The treatment for open-angle glaucoma focuses on reducing the elevated intraocular pressure by either decreasing the secretion of aqueous humor or increasing its outflow.

Ophthalmic Drug Delivery Systems01:23

Ophthalmic Drug Delivery Systems

Ophthalmic drug delivery faces major limitations due to poor absorption across the corneal membrane. This process is primarily driven by diffusion and is influenced by two main factors: the physicochemical properties of the drug and tear drainage. Most ophthalmic drugs, such as pilocarpine, epinephrine, atropine, and local anesthetics, are weak bases. They are typically formulated at an acidic pH to enhance chemical stability. However, this leads to high ionization, reducing their ability to...

Summary

Many ophthalmology clinical trials do not share individual participant data (IPD), despite policies. This study found less than half of trials in top journals endorsed IPD sharing, highlighting a need for improved adherence to data sharing practices.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Clinical Trials
  • Data Sharing

Background:

  • Individual participant data (IPD) sharing policies were implemented by International Committee of Medical Journal Editors journals in 2017.
  • Some published clinical trials have not adhered to the implemented IPD sharing policy.
  • This study investigates the adoption of IPD sharing policies in leading ophthalmology journals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the extent to which clinical trials published in top-tier ophthalmology journals comply with individual participant data (IPD) sharing policies.
  • To assess the number of clinical trials that endorse and implement IPD sharing.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review of original articles published in 2021 in the 10 highest-ranking ophthalmology journals was conducted.
  • Clinical trials were identified using the WHO definition.
  • Each article was screened for IPD sharing statements and clinical trial registration data.

Main Results:

  • Out of 1852 articles, 9.45% were clinical trials.
  • Only 49.14% of these clinical trials declared IPD sharing statements.
  • Less than half (48.83%) of the clinical trials were willing to share IPD, with only 5 sharing via an online repository.

Conclusions:

  • Adherence to individual participant data (IPD) sharing policies and clinical trial registration remains suboptimal in top ophthalmology journals.
  • A significant gap exists between policy implementation and actual practice in clinical trial data sharing.
  • Further efforts and policy evolution are needed to enhance compliance with data sharing mandates.
