Humanistic Psychology01:24

Humanistic Psychology

1.1K
Humanistic psychology emerged in the mid-20th century as a response to the deterministic and pessimistic nature of behaviorism and psychoanalysis. While behaviorism focused on observable behaviors influenced by the environment and psychoanalysis delved into unconscious motivations, both theories suggested that human actions lacked free will. In contrast, humanistic psychology offers a perspective that emphasizes the innate potential for goodness and growth within every individual.

Erikson's Theory on Socioemotional Development during Adulthood

145
Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development outlines a series of stages through which individuals progress across the lifespan. Each stage involves a psychosocial conflict that significantly influences personal growth and well-being. Three key stages — intimacy versus isolation, generativity versus stagnation, and integrity versus despair — highlight the developmental challenges faced in adulthood.

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

12.0K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Dimensions of Health and Illness01:21

Dimensions of Health and Illness

7.4K
The factors influencing the health-illness continuum can be internal or external and may or may not be under conscious control. They are related to the following eight human dimensions, and each dimension is interrelated to one other.

Social Exchange Theory02:06

Social Exchange Theory

34.6K
We have discussed why we form relationships, what attracts us to others, and different types of love. But what determines whether we are satisfied with and stay in a relationship? One theory that provides an explanation is social exchange theory. According to social exchange theory, we act as naïve economists in keeping a tally of the ratio of costs and benefits of forming and maintaining a relationship with others (Rusbult & Van Lange, 2003).

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

5.2K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Summary

Acting in line with personal values predicts future well-being, and positive well-being enables greater value fulfillment. This bidirectional relationship between value fulfillment and well-being was consistent across diverse populations.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Well-being Research
  • Value Theory

Background:

  • Empirical links between value importance and well-being are weak.
  • Value fulfillment, acting congruently with one's values, shows stronger correlations with well-being.
  • Previous research has not longitudinally examined the reciprocal relationship between value fulfillment and well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the temporal relationship between value fulfillment and well-being.
  • To determine if value fulfillment predicts well-being or vice versa over time.
  • To integrate clinical, personality, and social psychology perspectives on values and well-being.

Main Methods:

  • A 9-day diary study design.
  • Data collected from 184 participants across EU/UK, India, and Türkiye.
  • Analysis modeled associations between daily value fulfillment and daily well-being.

Main Results:

  • Fulfilling self-direction values predicted increased positive well-being the next day.
  • Fulfilling hedonism values predicted decreased negative well-being the next day.
  • Higher positive well-being predicted greater fulfillment of achievement, stimulation, and self-direction values the next day.
  • Higher negative well-being predicted less fulfillment of achievement values the next day.

Conclusions:

  • Demonstrates a bidirectional relationship between value fulfillment and well-being.
  • Findings have implications for understanding the interplay of personal values and mental health.
  • Results offer insights relevant to clinical psychology and therapeutic interventions.
