Post-COVID-19 patients frequently experience poor sleep quality, as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Many patients show persistent sleep disturbances for up to six months after SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Area of Science:
- Pulmonology
- Sleep Medicine
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Long COVID, a condition following SARS-CoV-2 infection, can manifest with diverse symptoms.
- Sleep disturbances are increasingly recognized as a significant post-viral sequela.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess sleep quality in post-COVID-19 patients using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
- To investigate the progression or regression of sleep quality over a six-month period.
- To identify potential correlations between COVID-19 severity and sleep quality.
Main Methods:
- Observational cohort study involving 65 adult patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection.
- Sleep quality was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire.
- Data collection included a six-month follow-up assessment.
Main Results:
- Over half of the post-COVID-19 patients (51%) reported poor sleep quality, indicated by a PSQI score ≥5.
- Sleep dissatisfaction was predominantly observed in patients with mild to moderate COVID-19.
- A significant proportion of patients exhibited persistent poor sleep quality at the six-month follow-up.
Conclusions:
- Poor sleep quality is a prevalent and often persistent issue in post-COVID-19 patients.
- Individualized assessment and treatment of sleep disorders are crucial in routine pneumological care for these patients.
- Addressing sleep quality is vital for improving overall health and psychological well-being in individuals recovering from COVID-19.
