    Summary

    Measles virus RNA was detected in Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) brains but not in multiple sclerosis or control brains. This suggests measles virus is unlikely to cause multiple sclerosis.

    Background:

    • Measles virus (MeV) is a paramyxovirus known to cause SSPE, a fatal neurological disease.
    • The potential role of MeV in other neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis (MS) remains debated.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence of measles virus nucleic acid sequences in post-mortem brain tissue from patients with SSPE and MS.
    • To determine if MeV is associated with MS pathology.

    Main Methods:

    • Construction of a measles virus genomic recombinant DNA library.
    • Use of cloned viral gene fragments (P, M, H proteins) as probes for hybridization.
