[Dexamethasone suppression test repeated after a suicide attempt].

    Summary

The dexamethasone suppression test (DST) did not correlate with suicide attempt lethality in 54 patients with depression. Stress and drug interactions likely caused high rates of DST nonsuppressors in this group.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Neuroendocrinology

    Context:

    • Depression diagnosis and treatment
    • Suicide attempt risk assessment

    Purpose:

    • To investigate the correlation between DST results and suicide attempt lethality in non-endogenous depressives.
    • To explore factors contributing to DST nonsuppression in patients admitted after a suicide attempt.

    Summary:

    • Three consecutive dexamethasone suppression tests (DSTs) were conducted on 54 non-endogenous depressive patients following a suicide attempt.
    • DST results showed no correlation with the lethality of the suicide attempt.
    • High proportions of DST nonsuppressors were observed, likely due to stress and drug interactions.

    Impact:

    • Findings suggest DST may not be a reliable predictor of suicide attempt severity in this patient population.
    • Highlights the potential confounding effects of stress and polypharmacy on DST outcomes in depressed individuals.
    • Informs clinical practice regarding the interpretation of DST results in the context of suicide risk.
