Deindividuation00:57

Deindividuation

26.4K
Deindividuation is a form of social influence on an individual’s behavior such that the individual engages in unusual or non-normal behavior while in a group setting. Why? Because in these group settings, the individual no longer sees themselves as an individual anymore, disinhibiting their behavior and personal restraint.

Social Exchange Theory02:06

Social Exchange Theory

34.6K
We have discussed why we form relationships, what attracts us to others, and different types of love. But what determines whether we are satisfied with and stay in a relationship? One theory that provides an explanation is social exchange theory. According to social exchange theory, we act as naïve economists in keeping a tally of the ratio of costs and benefits of forming and maintaining a relationship with others (Rusbult & Van Lange, 2003).

Naturalistic Observations02:30

Naturalistic Observations

15.5K
If you want to understand how behavior occurs, one of the best ways to gain information is to simply observe the behavior in its natural context. However, people might change their behavior in unexpected ways if they know they are being observed. How do researchers obtain accurate information when people tend to hide their natural behavior? As an example, imagine that your professor asks everyone in your class to raise their hand if they always wash their hands after using the restroom. Chances...

Factors Affecting Dissolution: Polymorphism, Amorphism and Pseudopolymorphism01:21

Factors Affecting Dissolution: Polymorphism, Amorphism and Pseudopolymorphism

338
Polymorphism refers to the existence of a drug substance in multiple crystalline forms, known as polymorphs. Recently, this term has been expanded to include solvates (forms containing a solvent), amorphous forms (non-crystalline forms), and desolvated solvates (forms from which the solvent has been removed).
Some polymorphic crystals possess lower aqueous solubility than their amorphous counterparts, leading to incomplete absorption. For instance, the oral suspension of Chloramphenicol, which...

Social Loafing01:37

Social Loafing

34.8K
Another way in which a group presence can affect performance is social loafing—the exertion of less effort by a person working together with a group. Social loafing occurs when our individual performance cannot be evaluated separately from the group. Thus, group performance declines on easy tasks (Karau & Williams, 1993). Essentially individual group members loaf and let other group members pick up the slack. Because each individual’s efforts cannot be evaluated,...

Social Proof00:52

Social Proof

27.7K
Social proof is a form of persuasion based on comparison and conformity. People compare their behavior and actions to what others are doing and will change to conform to do what their peers do.

Summary

Informality in Colombia is linked to lower educational attainment and less internalization of civic rules. Improving formalization policies requires understanding these intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for economic complexity.

Area of Science:

  • Socioeconomics
  • Economic Policy
  • Behavioral Economics

Background:

  • Economic informality hinders the impact of formalization policies.
  • Understanding behavioral drivers is crucial for effective policy.
  • Colombia's regional economic complexity index (ECI) provides a framework for analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between economic informality and the internalization of behavioral rules in Colombia.
  • To inform public policy for improved formalization and economic impact.
  • To explore the role of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations in formalization.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the 2018 regional economic complexity index (ECI) for Colombia.
  • Measured informality via social security (health insurance) affiliation.
  • Assessed civic rule internalization using traffic ticket data.
  • Employed Multivariate Probit regression for empirical analysis.

Main Results:

  • Lower educational levels correlate significantly with higher informal labor market participation.
  • Evidence suggests a link between informality and reduced internalization of civic rules.
  • Family composition and characteristics may influence the propensity for informality.

Conclusions:

  • Educational attainment is a key factor in formalization propensity.
  • Internalization of behavioral rules is intertwined with economic complexity and formalization.
  • Policy interventions should consider socio-cultural factors and intrinsic motivations for greater impact.
