    Summary

    This study found no link between methylxanthine intake and benign breast disease. Further analysis of fibrocystic disease subtypes and menstrual tenderness also showed no association.

    Background:

    • Benign breast disease (BBD) is common in women.
    • Methylxanthines, found in coffee and tea, are suspected dietary factors in BBD.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between methylxanthine consumption and biopsied benign breast disease.
    • To examine specific histologic subtypes of BBD and menstrual symptoms in relation to methylxanthine intake.

    Main Methods:

    • A case-control study utilizing data from 1,569 cases and 1,846 controls (1973-1980).
    • Analysis included total BBD, fibrocystic disease, benign neoplasms, and other conditions.
    • Subgroup analyses explored hyperplasia, atypia, cysts, and menstrual tenderness.

    Main Results:

    • No overall association was found between methylxanthine consumption and benign breast disease.
    • Specific histologic types of BBD, including fibrocystic disease, showed no risk trends with methylxanthine intake.
    • No relationship was observed between methylxanthine consumption and menstrual breast tenderness.

    Conclusions:

    • Methylxanthine consumption does not appear to be a risk factor for benign breast disease.
    • Dietary methylxanthines are unlikely to influence the development of various benign breast conditions or associated symptoms.
