A validated competency framework for Lebanese industry pharmacists was developed. Recommendations include enhancing education in emergency preparedness and research & development for practice-ready professionals.
Area of Science:
- Pharmaceutical Sciences
- Professional Competencies
- Workforce Development
Background:
- The pharmaceutical industry requires specialized skills beyond traditional pharmacy practice.
- A validated competency framework is essential for defining and developing these industry-specific skills.
- Previous frameworks may not adequately address the unique demands of pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Purpose of the Study:
- To validate a specialized competency framework for industry pharmacists in Lebanon.
- To identify correlates of competency domains within a pilot sample of these professionals.
- To inform educational and training needs for the pharmaceutical industry workforce.
Main Methods:
- Expert review and Delphi technique were used to refine an existing framework.
- A web-based cross-sectional survey was conducted among ten Lebanese industry pharmacists.
- Participants were recruited via the Syndicate of the Pharmaceutical Industries in Lebanon.
Main Results:
- A seven-domain competency framework for Lebanese industry pharmacists was validated.
- High reliability (Cronbach alpha close to one) was observed across all domains.
- Domains related to industrial development and emergency preparedness showed limited correlation with others, with lower confidence in research and development, especially for PharmD holders.
Conclusions:
- The specialized competency framework for Lebanese industry pharmacists is validated.
- Specific domains, namely industrial development and emergency preparedness, appear distinct.
- Enhanced education in emergency preparedness and R&D, alongside industry-specific training, is recommended for academic curricula and postgraduate studies.
