Background:

Domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST) is a significant public health issue affecting vulnerable adolescent populations.
Identifying risk factors is crucial for developing targeted prevention and intervention strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess characteristics associated with the highest risk of DMST involvement among adolescent girls.
To investigate the relationship between risk behaviors, home environment, child maltreatment, psychiatric complexity, and DMST.

Main Methods:

Retrospective chart review of adolescent girls with and without a history of DMST.
Multivariate clustering analysis to identify distinct risk groups.
Assessment of psychiatric complexity and its mediation in DMST risk.

Main Results:

A "high risk" cluster of patients exhibited higher psychiatric complexity and greater likelihood of DMST involvement.
Increased psychiatric complexity was independently associated with a higher risk of DMST, irrespective of other risk factors.
Statistical significance was found for the association between high risk, psychiatric complexity, and DMST involvement (p < .05).

Conclusions:

Adolescent girls with increased psychiatric complexity are at a greater risk for DMST.
Social characteristics, psychiatric issues, and sexual victimization are interconnected.
Findings underscore the importance of addressing mental health in preventing sexual exploitation.
