The Parathyroid Glands00:59

The Parathyroid Glands

2.2K
The two pairs of parathyroid glands embedded within the posterior surface of the thyroid gland are restricted by a dense capsule around them. These glands comprise two distinct cell populations—parathyroid oxyphil and parathyroid principal cells- pivotal in calcium homeostasis.
Oxyphil cells, whose functions remain elusive, emerge during late puberty, adding a layer of complexity to the parathyroid gland's intricacies. In contrast, principal parathyroid cells undertake a vital role by...

DefinitionComputed Tomography (CT) of the genitourinary (GU) tract is a non-invasive imaging modality that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and adjacent structures such as the adrenal glands.PurposeCT scans of the GU tract serve several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Diseases: Detects kidney stones, tumors, cysts, and congenital...

Calcium-Scoring CT ScanA calcium-scoring CT scan, also known as coronary artery calcium (CAC) scan, detects calcium deposits in the coronary arteries. This test assesses the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), which can lead to cardiovascular events such as angina, heart failure, and sudden cardiac arrest.A calcium-scoring CT scan is generally recommended for individuals at intermediate risk of CAD without symptoms. It includes:Men aged 40-75 and women aged 50-75: Especially those with a...

Computed Tomography

4.6K
Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body.
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

Summary

Texture analysis of CT scans can detect osseous changes in hyperparathyroidism. The sternum showed the most significant differences in trabecular architecture between patients and controls.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Bone Metabolism

Background:

  • Hyperparathyroidism can lead to significant changes in bone structure.
  • Detecting these osseous changes early is crucial for patient management.
  • Current imaging methods may not fully capture subtle trabecular alterations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of computed tomography (CT) texture analysis in identifying bone changes in hyperparathyroidism.
  • To compare texture features in hyperparathyroid patients versus controls.
  • To determine optimal head and neck regions for assessing hyperparathyroidism-related bone alterations.

Main Methods:

  • 30 hyperparathyroid patients and 30 age-matched controls underwent contrast-enhanced neck CT.
  • Texture analysis was performed on 8 osseous regions, including mandible, C4 vertebra, sternum, and clavicles.
  • 41 texture features were extracted and analyzed using a mixed linear regression model.

Main Results:

  • Statistically significant differences in texture features were observed in all 8 analyzed osseous regions between hyperparathyroid patients and controls.
  • The sternum exhibited the highest number of texture features with significant differences.
  • CT texture analysis successfully differentiated bone changes associated with hyperparathyroidism.

Conclusions:

  • CT texture analysis reveals significant differences in osseous architecture between hyperparathyroid patients and controls.
  • Texture features show promise in discriminating subtle trabecular changes in the head and neck.
  • This technique could enhance the detection and evaluation of hyperparathyroidism-induced bone alterations.
