    Summary

    Men with right hemisphere strokes experienced significantly more sexual dysfunction than those with left hemisphere strokes. This suggests the right brain hemisphere is crucial for sexual function.

    Background:

    • The role of brain hemisphere dominance in sexual function is not fully understood.
    • Previous research suggests potential lateralization of cognitive and emotional processes related to sexual response.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between unilateral stroke location (right vs. left hemisphere) and the prevalence of sexual dysfunction.
    • To test the hypothesis that the right hemisphere is dominant for sexual function.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 26 men with unilateral stroke was assessed.
    • Prevalence of major sexual dysfunction was compared between men with right hemisphere stroke and men with left hemisphere stroke.

    Main Results:

    • A significantly higher prevalence of major sexual dysfunction was observed in men with right hemisphere stroke (9 out of 12) compared to those with left hemisphere stroke (4 out of 14).

    Conclusions:

    • The findings support the hypothesis that the right hemisphere plays a dominant role in sexual function.
    • These results indicate that brain hemisphere activation is critical for maintaining normal sexual function.
