Research capacity building through the American Thoracic Society (ATS) Methods in Epidemiologic, Clinical, and Operations Research (MECOR) Program in Turkiye leads to increased publication rates. Higher course levels correlate with a greater likelihood of research questions being published.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Research
  • Epidemiology
  • Clinical Research

Background:

  • The American Thoracic Society (ATS) Methods in Epidemiologic, Clinical, and Operations Research (MECOR) Program is designed to enhance research capabilities in low and middle-income countries.
  • The MECOR Program offers tiered levels of training, guiding participants through research protocol development and manuscript writing.
  • MECOR Turkiye has been consistently delivered annually since 2008, contributing to local research capacity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify the number of published articles originating from research questions developed within the ATS MECOR Program in Turkiye.
  • To assess the impact of the MECOR Program by analyzing the publication success rate of student-generated research questions across different training levels.
  • To report on the publication outcomes of research questions developed between 2008 and 2018.

Main Methods:

  • Collected 176 research questions from all levels (1, 2, and 3) of the ATS MECOR Program in Turkiye (2008-2018).
  • Conducted a comprehensive search across Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, and ResearchGate in April 2022 to identify published articles.
  • Documented the journals in which the research questions were published, noting indexing in Science Citation Index (SCI) or SCI Expanded.

Main Results:

  • Out of 176 research questions, 55 (31.3%) resulted in published articles.
  • A significant positive linear association was observed between the MECOR course level and the publication rate (Level 1: 18.4%, Level 2: 30%, Level 3: 46.7%; P=0.012).
  • The median time to publication was three years, with no significant difference across course levels. 43 articles were published in SCI/SCI Expanded indexed journals.

Conclusions:

  • Publication of research articles serves as a key indicator of the ATS MECOR Program's impact.
  • The program demonstrates a significant capacity to generate research output among its participants.
  • Increased participation and progression through higher levels of the MECOR program are associated with enhanced research productivity and publication success.
