    Background:

    • Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) is used for preventing retinopathy of prematurity in premature infants.
    • Intramuscular administration of vitamin E has been reported to cause soft tissue calcification.

    Observation:

    • Two premature infants developed extensive soft tissue calcification after receiving intramuscular vitamin E.
    • The calcifications were associated with the dosage and duration of vitamin E treatment.

    Findings:

    • The soft tissue calcifications observed in both infants followed a benign clinical course.
    • The extent of calcification did not correlate with adverse outcomes.

    Implications:

    • This study highlights a potential adverse effect of intramuscular vitamin E in neonates.
    • It suggests that even extensive calcifications may resolve without long-term sequelae.
    • Further research into optimal vitamin E dosing and administration routes is warranted.
