Summary

Focusing on breath during synchronized tasks enhances physiological synchrony between individuals. This study on autonomic rhythms found increased heart rate and skin conductance synchrony when participants concentrated on their breath.

Background:

  • Individuals influence each other's emotional states through resonance and coordinated autonomic rhythms during social interactions.
  • Previous research has not investigated the impact of interoceptive focus manipulation on autonomic synchrony during hyperscanning synchronized tasks.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess psychophysiological synchrony using autonomic measures during dyadic linguistic and motor synchronization tasks.
  • To compare autonomic synchrony under two interoceptive conditions: breath focus versus no focus.

Main Methods:

  • Employed hyperscanning with 13 dyads (26 participants) performing synchronized linguistic and motor tasks.
  • Continuously monitored autonomic measures: electrodermal (skin conductance level and response - SCL, SCR) and cardiovascular (heart rate - HR, HR variability - HRV).
  • Computed correlational coefficients to analyze physiological synchrony between dyads.

Main Results:

  • Higher synchrony in HR, HRV, SCL, and SCR was observed in the breath focus condition compared to the no focus condition during motor synchronization.
  • Motor synchronization tasks generally showed higher synchrony than linguistic tasks.
  • Increased synchrony for HR, SCL, and SCR was found in the breath focus condition during linguistic tasks.

Conclusions:

  • Interoceptive focus manipulation significantly impacts autonomic synchrony during synchronized tasks.
  • Findings support the use of hyperscanning to study the effects of breath awareness practices on autonomic synchrony in real-time, synchronized interactions.
