Background:

  • Chin aesthetics are vital for facial balance, with 20% of craniofacial issues involving chin size, shape, or position.
  • Genioplasty addresses chin irregularities in all three dimensions, but long-term hard and soft tissue stability requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a scoping review on the stability of hard and soft tissue changes following various genioplasty procedures.
  • To evaluate the relapse rates at six months post-surgery for both augmentation and reduction genioplasty techniques.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search was conducted across major databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, etc.) from 2011 to 2022.
  • Included studies were prospective/retrospective cohorts, case-control, observational studies, and RCTs with ≥10 patients and ≥6 months follow-up.
  • Seven studies (five augmentation, two reduction genioplasty) met the eligibility criteria.

Main Results:

  • Augmentation genioplasty showed an average hard tissue advancement of 7.04 mm with 0.69 mm relapse; vertical movement had 1.8 mm with 0.74 mm relapse.
  • Reduction genioplasty averaged 3.2 mm hard tissue reduction with 0.2 mm relapse, and 0.8 mm soft tissue reduction with 0.3 mm relapse.
  • Soft to hard tissue ratios ranged from 0.89 to 0.97, indicating predictable soft tissue response.

Conclusions:

  • Both augmentation and reduction genioplasty are stable and reliable for achieving aesthetic chin alterations.
  • Rigid fixation is the recommended method for securing genioplasty results.
  • The findings support genioplasty as an effective procedure for improving chin aesthetics with predictable outcomes.
