This study shows that combining Nudging with values-crystallization effectively promotes environmentally-themed transformative learning and sustained pro-environmental behaviors, offering a new approach for sustainability practitioners.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Psychology
- Behavioral Science
- Sustainability Studies
Background:
- Addressing environmental problems requires durable changes in behavior.
- Transformative Learning (TL) is crucial for achieving these changes, but existing methods lack environmental focus.
- A recent method for behavior transformation needs direction for environmental applications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore the effectiveness of combining Nudging with values-crystallization for promoting environmentally-themed transformative behaviors.
- To assess the retention of these behaviors over time.
- To provide a method for pro-environmental practitioners.
Main Methods:
- Participants underwent Nudging (environmental questions and behavior questionnaire) followed by group values-crystallization.
- Post-event interviews at 3-4 days and 14-56 days assessed transformative behaviors.
- Two separate participant groups were studied.
Main Results:
- The Nudging_Plus_Values-crystallization approach successfully induced environmentally-themed transformative behaviors, including waste sorting and resource conservation.
- These behaviors were retained long-term, as confirmed by follow-up interviews.
- The method proved effective across two distinct participant groups.
Conclusions:
- The Nudging_Plus_Values-crystallization approach is a promising tool for sustainability practitioners seeking to foster pro-environmental behavior change.
- Further research is needed to confirm causation and understand the mechanisms linking Nudging, reflection, values-crystallization, and Transformative Learning.
- The process shows potential for transferability to diverse behavior change programs.
