Metabolic alkalosis in dogs with upper gastrointestinal obstruction is less common than previously thought. Treatment of the obstruction resolves this acid-base disorder in most canine patients.

- Surgical or endoscopic alleviation of the obstruction effectively resolves metabolic alkalosis.
