This study introduces a low-cost, homemade pelvic examination model for medical training. The DIY model proved as effective and realistic as commercial alternatives, enhancing learning for students and residents.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Simulation Training
- Gynecological Procedures
Background:
- Pelvic examinations are crucial but challenging to teach due to patient comfort concerns.
- Traditional training relies on observation, lacking standardized simulation.
- High cost of commercial pelvic models limits accessibility for training programs.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and evaluate a cost-effective, homemade pelvic examination model.
- To provide an accessible simulation tool for teaching essential gynecological examination skills.
- To improve trainee confidence and competence in performing pelvic exams.
Main Methods:
- A literature review was conducted to identify existing methods and products.
- A low-cost pelvic examination model was created using readily available materials.
- A single-blind survey assessed trainee perceptions of the homemade model compared to commercial models and live patients.
Main Results:
- The homemade model was manufactured for under $20 and took approximately two hours.
- 77 participants found the low-cost model to be as effective as commercial simulators.
- 31% of participants found the homemade model more realistic than commercial alternatives.
Conclusions:
- Cost-effective, homemade simulation models can effectively train medical professionals in pelvic examinations.
- The developed model offers a realistic and accessible alternative to expensive commercial simulators.
- Future iterations can be expanded to include bimanual examination training.
