Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of surgery on respiratory function in patients with asymptomatic CLM.
  • To provide data to inform the surgical management of CLM.
  • To investigate short-term pulmonary outcomes post-intervention.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 39 patients operated for CLM (2012-2021).
  • Respiratory function assessed using tidal breath analysis (TBA) in sleep within 2 years of life.
  • Exclusion of patients with comorbidities affecting pulmonary function; analysis of tPTEF/tE, tV, and RR.

Main Results:

  • Pre- and post-operative tPTEF/tE were within normal limits.
  • Pre-operative high respiratory rate (RR) in extralobar sequestration improved post-surgery.
  • Reduced tidal volume (tV) pre-operatively normalized post-surgery in all groups.
  • Lobectomy and intralobar sequestration showed greater improvement; thoracotomy resulted in reduced tV.

Conclusions:

  • Asymptomatic CLM can present with abnormal pulmonary function.
  • Surgical intervention leads to improved pulmonary function in these patients.
  • Findings support an interventional approach for managing CLM.
