Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Background:

Hoarding disorder presents a persistent challenge in managing possessions.
Existing assessment tools for hoarding symptoms are not available in Arabic.
This gap limits clinical and research efforts in Arabic-speaking populations.

Purpose of the Study:

To translate and culturally adapt the Hoarding Rating Scale-Self Report (HRS-SR) for Arabic speakers.
To validate the psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the HRS-SR.
To provide a reliable assessment tool for hoarding symptoms in Arabic-speaking populations.

Main Methods:

The Hoarding Rating Scale-Self Report (HRS-SR) was translated into Arabic using a rigorous forward and back-translation methodology.
A cross-sectional online survey was administered to 500 participants across four Arabic-speaking countries.
Psychometric validation included internal consistency, test-retest reliability, convergent validity with the GAD-7, and confirmatory factor analysis.

Main Results:

The Arabic HRS-SR demonstrated good internal consistency (McDonald's omega and Cronbach's alpha ≈ 0.80) and acceptable test-retest reliability.
Strong convergent validity was observed between the Arabic HRS-SR and the GAD-7, indicating good correlation with anxiety symptoms.
Confirmatory factor analysis supported a one-factor model, confirming the scale measures a single underlying construct of hoarding.

Conclusions:

The Arabic version of the HRS-SR is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing hoarding symptoms.
This validated tool can facilitate clinical diagnosis and academic research among Arabic-speaking individuals.
Further research is recommended to explore cultural nuances and validate the scale in clinical settings.
