Area of Science:

  • Neurobiology
  • Educational Technology

Background:

  • Traditional computer simulations for neurobiology education face challenges in schools with limited IT infrastructure.
  • Students often possess personal smartphones, presenting an accessible platform for educational tools.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate web-based neurophysiology simulators accessible on various devices.
  • To enhance neurobiology education in resource-limited settings, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Main Methods:

  • Developed five web-based simulators using HTML5 and JavaScript covering key neurophysiology concepts.
  • Simulators are freely accessible on any device, irrespective of model or operating system.
  • Conducted classroom surveys to assess the impact of simulators on student learning.

Main Results:

  • The web-based simulators effectively cover diverse neurophysiology topics like ion channel currents and action potentials.
  • Student understanding and motivation to learn neurobiology increased significantly after using the simulators.
  • The simulators proved particularly valuable during COVID-19 restrictions for continued learning.

Conclusions:

  • Web-based simulators offer a viable solution for neurobiology education in schools with low IT readiness.
  • These accessible tools enhance student engagement and learning outcomes in neurobiology.
  • The developed simulators are a practical and effective resource for modern neurobiology instruction.
