    Summary

    This study found no significant visual pathway abnormalities in hepatic cirrhosis patients using pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials (VEP). VEP testing did not reveal differences between patients and controls, suggesting visual issues may stem from other factors.

    Background:

    • Hepatic cirrhosis can affect various organ systems, but its impact on visual pathways is not well-established.
    • Visual evoked potentials (VEP) are sensitive electrophysiological tools for assessing the integrity of the visual pathway.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate potential visual pathway dysfunction in patients with hepatic cirrhosis using VEP.
    • To compare VEP responses between patients with hepatic cirrhosis, healthy controls, and neuroleptic-treated psychotic patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Whole-field pattern-reversal VEPs were recorded in 15 patients with hepatic cirrhosis, 12 healthy controls, and 24 neuroleptic-treated patients.
    • VEP latency and amplitude of the P100 component were analyzed for binocular and monocular stimulation.

    • Observed visual disturbances in hepatic cirrhosis may be attributable to factors other than primary visual pathway dysfunction, such as attention deficits or co-existing visual system disorders.
