Cognitive Dissonance

32.7K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Area of Science:

  • Military Psychology
  • Mental Health Services Research
  • Occupational Health

Background:

  • The U.S. Army implemented mandatory annual wellness checks to foster psychological resilience and introduce soldiers to counseling services.
  • Previous research indicates a need for accessible mental health support within high-stress military environments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of mandatory annual wellness checks in a pilot Army program.
  • To assess the impact of these checks on soldiers' attitudes toward seeking help, resilience, and thriving.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey was administered to 7,831 soldiers participating in the pilot program.
  • Statistical analyses controlled for demographic factors (rank, age, education) and psychological traits (negative affect).

Main Results:

  • Approximately 50% of soldiers found wellness checks moderately to highly helpful professionally and personally.
  • Participants with wellness checks showed increased willingness to seek mental health support and reported higher resilience and thriving.
  • Wellness checks were associated with reduced stigma-related concerns compared to non-participants.

Conclusions:

  • The study suggests mandatory wellness checks are associated with improved attitudes toward care seeking, enhanced resilience, and greater thriving among soldiers.
  • Therapeutic common factors, such as feeling listened to and skill acquisition, partially mediated the positive outcomes.
  • Findings support the implementation of similar programs for military personnel and other high-stress occupations.
