Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Summary

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) effectively measures posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom clusters in disability claimants. The Anxiety-Related Experiences (ARX) scale showed the strongest prediction across PTSD symptom clusters.

Background:

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) family of instruments has established utility in assessing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomology.
Limited research exists on the MMPI-3's ability to assess PTSD symptoms, particularly within forensic disability contexts.
Understanding MMPI-3 scale predictors is crucial for accurate PTSD assessment in disability evaluations.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify the most potent MMPI-3 scale predictors for individual posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom clusters.
To examine the associations between MMPI-3 scales and PTSD symptom clusters using self-report data.
To validate the MMPI-3's utility in assessing PTSD in disability claimants.

Utilized a sample of 716 disability claimants for correlation, regression, and dominance analyses.
