A new person-centered coding framework, co-designed with consumers, effectively analyzes qualitative Patient Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) data. This approach improves healthcare experience by making qualitative PREMs data more accessible for analysis.
Area of Science:
- Health Services Research
- Qualitative Data Analysis
- Patient-Centered Care
Background:
- Patient Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) offer insights into person-centered care.
- Analyzing qualitative PREMs data is challenging for healthcare organizations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To co-design a person-centered coding framework for analyzing qualitative PREMs data.
- To enhance the utility of qualitative data from patient experience surveys.
Main Methods:
- Co-design principles were used to develop a deductive coding framework based on Picker Principles of Person-Centered Care.
- The framework was iteratively tested and refined over two quality improvement cycles with cross-professional stakeholders, including consumer representatives.
- Inter-coder reliability and perceived usefulness were key evaluation measures.
Main Results:
- The Picker Principles provided a suitable framework for inpatient PREMs data.
- A co-designed coding template in a spreadsheet met end-user needs.
- Refinements, including adopting a first-person perspective, improved reliability and user feedback.
Conclusions:
- A feasible, reliable, and acceptable deductive coding framework was developed for analyzing qualitative PREMs data.
- This framework is usable by individuals without prior qualitative data analysis experience.
- The study offers a model for health services to leverage qualitative PREMs data and consumer partnerships for improving healthcare.
