    Summary

    Genetic factors significantly influence atopic dermatitis development. This study found a higher incidence and stronger genetic link in twins, indicating environmental factors act on susceptible individuals.

    Background:

    • Atopic dermatitis is a complex skin condition with increasing prevalence.
    • A genetic predisposition is suspected to play a role in its development.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the increasing incidence of atopic dermatitis.
    • To determine the role of genetic factors in atopic dermatitis etiology using twin studies.

    Main Methods:

    • A twin study was conducted on 592 like-sexed twin pairs in Denmark.
    • Cumulative incidence rates of atopic dermatitis were analyzed across birth cohorts (1960-1964 and 1970-1974).
    • Concordance rates for atopic dermatitis were compared between monozygotic and dizygotic twins.

    • The cumulative incidence of atopic dermatitis increased from 0.03 to 0.10 between the 1960-1964 and 1970-1974 birth cohorts.
    • Monozygotic twins showed higher concordance rates (0.86 risk) for atopic dermatitis compared to dizygotic twins (0.21 risk).
    • The risk for dizygotic twins did not differ from that of ordinary siblings.

    Conclusions:

    • Genetic factors play a decisive role in the development of atopic dermatitis.
    • Environmental factors interact with genetic susceptibility in the manifestation of atopic dermatitis.
