Summary

Radiotherapy may be safe for patients with Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS), a rare mitochondrial disorder. A KSS patient with basal cell carcinoma showed a complete tumor response to radiotherapy with no adverse effects, suggesting potential safety for this population.

Background:

  • Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS) is a rare mitochondrial DNA depletion disorder.
  • The safety and efficacy of radiotherapy in KSS patients are not well-established.
  • Basal cell carcinoma is a common skin cancer, but its treatment in rare genetic disorders requires careful consideration.

Observation:

  • A 60-year-old male diagnosed with KSS also had locally advanced basal cell carcinoma.
  • The patient received radiotherapy with curative intent as the sole treatment modality.
  • Treatment was well-tolerated, with no significant acute or late toxicities observed.

Findings:

  • The patient achieved a complete clinical and radiological response to radiotherapy.
  • No tumor recurrence was observed 2.5 years post-treatment.
  • This case suggests radiotherapy may be a viable treatment option for basal cell carcinoma in KSS patients.

Implications:

  • Radiotherapy could be considered for treating malignancies in patients with KSS.
  • Further research is warranted to investigate the effects of ionizing radiation on individuals with mitochondrial DNA defects.
