Increasing effective playing time in football matches significantly enhances technical-tactical and physical performance metrics. This study found higher ball possession and external load in conditions with more active play.
Area of Science:
- Sports Science
- Football Analytics
- Performance Analysis
Background:
- Effective playing time is a critical factor in football, influencing player performance.
- Understanding the impact of varying playing time on match parameters is essential for training and strategy.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the effects of increased effective playing time on technical-tactical and physical parameters in football matches.
- To compare match outcomes under conditions of continuous play versus play with stoppages.
Main Methods:
- 179 highly trained male football players participated in two conditions: 45 minutes of continuous play (T45) and 30 minutes with stoppages (T30).
- Technical-tactical (ball possession) and physical (external load, running speeds, accelerations) parameters were measured.
- Statistical analysis compared outcomes between T45 and T30 conditions.
Main Results:
- T30 condition resulted in significantly higher total time, effective playing time, and stopped time compared to T45.
- Ball possession (total and 1/3) was significantly higher in T30.
- External load indicators, including total distance, moderate- and high-speed running, high-speed activities, accelerations, and decelerations, were significantly greater in T30.
Conclusions:
- Higher effective playing time in football matches is associated with enhanced technical-tactical execution and increased physical demands.
- Manipulating playing time by reducing stoppages can lead to a more intense and demanding match scenario.
