    Background:

    • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a serious condition with significant mortality.
    • The potential for inherited predisposition to AAA remains incompletely understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the hypothesis that a tendency toward abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) may be inherited.
    • To quantify the risk of AAA in first-degree relatives of patients diagnosed with AAA.

    Main Methods:

    • A case-control study comparing family histories of 250 patients with AAA to 250 control subjects.
    • Analysis included adjustment for age and sex to determine relative risk.

    Main Results:

    • 19.2% of AAA patients reported a first-degree relative with an aneurysm, versus 2.4% of controls.
    • Individuals with an affected first-degree relative had an estimated 11.6-fold increased risk of AAA.
