Non-equilibrium in the Cell

4.5K
An important concept in studying metabolism and energy is that of chemical equilibrium. Most chemical reactions are reversible. They can proceed in both directions, releasing energy into their environment in one direction, and absorbing it from the environment in the other direction. The same is true for the chemical reactions involved in cell metabolism, such as the breaking down and building up of proteins into and from individual amino acids, respectively. Reactants within a closed system...

Summary

Google searches provide more readable and higher-quality patient education materials for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) than ChatGPT. AI-generated content on BPPV was found to be less understandable and actionable for patients.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Informatics
  • Digital Health
  • Patient Education

Background:

  • Online patient education is crucial for managing conditions like benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).
  • Traditional search engines and emerging AI conversational models offer different avenues for accessing health information.
  • Comparing the quality and accessibility of information from these sources is vital for patient understanding.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantitatively compare the readability, quality, understandability, and actionability of online patient education materials for BPPV.
  • To evaluate information provided by traditional search engines (Google) against conversational AI (ChatGPT).

Main Methods:

  • A comparative analysis of the top 30 Google search results and ChatGPT responses for common BPPV patient questions.
  • Utilized validated metrics: Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL), Flesch Reading Ease (FRE), DISCERN instrument, and Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool.
  • Information was assessed for readability, quality, understandability, and actionability by independent reviewers.

Main Results:

  • Google search results demonstrated superior readability with lower FKGL and higher FRE scores compared to ChatGPT.
  • ChatGPT responses exhibited lower quality and understandability, indicated by DISCERN scores.
  • While ChatGPT showed high accuracy and currency, its overall information quality and readability were inferior to Google search results for BPPV.

Conclusions:

  • Information on ChatGPT regarding BPPV is less readable, of lower quality, and harder to comprehend than content found via Google searches.
  • Healthcare providers should exercise caution when recommending AI models for patient education on BPPV.
  • Further research is needed to improve AI-generated health information accessibility and quality.
