    Background:

    • Concerns exist regarding long-term cochlear prosthesis use, including spiral ganglion cell degeneration, neuronal loss, and new bone formation.
    • Such effects could manifest as reduced hearing sensation and audiological performance in cochlear implant recipients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the long-term physiological effects of multichannel cochlear implants.
    • To assess the stability of cochlear implant functioning over a 1-year period.

    Main Methods:

    • Evaluated five patients with Australian multi-electrode multichannel cochlear implants over one year.
    • Assessed electrical thresholds, comfort levels, pure tone and speech thresholds, MAC battery, vowel/consonant recognition, and speech tracking.
    • Compared results to postoperative data after stimulation and a 3-month training period.

    • No deterioration in cochlear implant functioning was observed in any of the tested patients after one year.
