Background:

  • Idiopathic ulcerative laryngitis (IUL) is a rare condition characterized by vocal cord ulcers and prolonged healing.
  • Limited data exists on IUL, particularly within the Indian population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively evaluate the clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of Idiopathic Ulcerative Laryngitis in Indian patients.
  • To assess the efficacy of conservative management for IUL.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective evaluation of 21 patients across 3 centers.
  • Diagnosis confirmed via fibreoptic laryngoscopy and stroboscopic assessment.
  • Treatment focused on supportive care and regular follow-up; biopsy in two cases.

Main Results:

  • Median age of patients was 39 years, with a higher prevalence in males.
  • Average recovery time for compliant patients was 9.24 weeks.
  • Significant improvement in GRBAS scores (9 to 5.93, p < 0.0001) and self-reported voice outcomes.

  • Conservative management is effective, leading to full recovery in most cases within 3-4 weeks.
