Insights
Managing a parapharyngeal abscess in a child requires careful planning to avoid airway obstruction during anesthesia. This case report details successful airway management for a pediatric patient undergoing incision and drainage.
Area of Science:
- Anesthesiology
- Pediatric Otolaryngology
- Emergency Medicine
Background:
- Parapharyngeal abscesses pose significant risks for airway compromise.
- Anesthetic induction in pediatric patients with deep neck infections is particularly challenging.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe a successful airway management strategy for a pediatric case of parapharyngeal abscess.
- To highlight the challenges and considerations for anesthetic induction in this specific clinical scenario.
Main Methods:
- Case report of a 13-year-old child with a parapharyngeal abscess.
- Detailed description of the airway management techniques employed during anesthetic induction and surgical procedure (incision and drainage).
Main Results:
- Successful anesthetic induction and completion of the incision and drainage procedure.
- No major airway-related complications were reported during the management of this pediatric parapharyngeal abscess.
Conclusions:
- Careful preoperative assessment and tailored airway management are crucial for pediatric patients with parapharyngeal abscess.
- Effective management can be achieved with appropriate planning and execution, ensuring patient safety.
Abstract:
Airway management in a case of parapharyngeal abscess is challenging as there can be airway obstruction during anaesthetic induction. We describe airway management in 13-yr-old child with parapharyngeal abscess scheduled for incision and drainage. Informed consent was taken for publishing this case report.

Parenteral Anesthetics: Overview
Acute Pharyngitis
Acute pharyngitis is the inflammation of the back of the throat (pharynx), commonly resulting in a sore throat. It is a frequently encountered condition that prompts individuals to seek medical advice.
Classification
Acute pharyngitis can be categorized based on its underlying cause:
Chronic Pharyngitis
Etiology
It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils.
Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Allergic reactions to pollen, mold, and pet dander, chronic cough, excessive voice usage,...
