Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and collate global population-based data on assistive technology access in older adults.
  • To assess the availability and characteristics of datasets related to functional limitations and AT.
  • To highlight gaps and opportunities in current data collection for AT research.

  • Systematic search of the Maelstrom Research Catalogue and Disability Data Report for relevant datasets.
  • Inclusion criteria: population-based cohorts and repeated cross-sectional surveys with AT and functional limitations data collected since 2009.
  • Analysis of dataset characteristics, geographical representation, and AT indicators.

Main Results:

  • 47 cohorts and 62 surveys met inclusion criteria from an initial pool of 81 cohorts and 202 surveys.
  • High-income countries dominate cohort data (over 40%), while African surveys are most represented (40%).
  • 'Use' is the primary AT access indicator; glasses and hearing aids are the most common AT types.

Conclusions:

  • Significant gaps exist in global data coverage and representation for AT access in aging populations.
  • Existing datasets offer opportunities for immediate analysis, but methodological improvements are needed.
  • Future research should focus on inclusive data collection to better understand AT needs and access for all older adults.
