Background:

Traditional neuropsychological tests often lack real-world applicability.
Assessing functional capacities in older adults is crucial for independence.
Virtual environments offer novel methods for functional assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the Virtual Environment Grocery Store (VEGS) for assessing older adults' adaptive functioning.
To determine the relationship between VEGS performance and both self-reported and performance-based adaptive functioning measures.
To explore VEGS's predictive validity for functional capacities in older adults.

Main Methods:

Ninety-eight older adults (ages 65-90) participated.
Participants completed the VEGS, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale (IADLS), and Texas Functional Living Scale (TFLS).
Statistical analyses examined associations between VEGS performance and adaptive functioning measures.

Main Results:

VEGS performance was not associated with self-rated adaptive functioning (IADLS).
All tested VEGS variables significantly correlated with performance-based adaptive functioning (TFLS).
VEGS recall, correct item selection, and prescription adherence predicted TFLS performance, explaining substantial variance.

Conclusions:

The VEGS demonstrates significant value in predicting performance-based adaptive functioning in older adults.
Virtual reality assessments like VEGS may offer a more ecologically valid alternative to traditional tests.
Further research should explore VEGS utility in diverse clinical and research settings.
