Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can cause posterior uveo-retinal manifestations, including vascular changes, even after recovery. Post-COVID-19 patients require eye evaluations to detect these potential vision-threatening complications.

Background:

  • Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a systemic viral illness.
  • Ocular manifestations, particularly posterior segment (uvea and retina) involvement, have been reported in COVID-19 patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To summarize the posterior segment manifestations and imaging characteristics in patients with and after COVID-19.

Main Methods:

  • A literature search of PubMed/MEDLINE was conducted for articles published between December 1, 2019, and May 30, 2021.
  • Included were 26 case reports and 8 case series detailing clinical features and imaging findings.

Main Results:

  • Reported posterior segment manifestations include cotton wool spots, retinal hemorrhages, central serous retinopathy, optic neuritis, and retinal vascular occlusions.
  • Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) revealed microvascular changes in retinal plexuses in COVID-19 patients.

Conclusions:

  • COVID-19 can lead to uveo-retinal complications that persist after recovery.
  • Ophthalmological evaluation is recommended for all COVID-19 patients, even those without ocular symptoms, to detect posterior segment involvement.
  • Some patients may necessitate anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapy for identified vascular changes.
