Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to report on the use of preoperative spectral domain optical coherence tomography to assess retinal pathology and guide the surgical approach to proliferative vitreoretinopathy.
Methods:
A case report was discussed.
Results:
A 70-year-old man developed proliferative vitreoretinopathy after surgical repair of a macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. In preparation for further surgery, inferior preretinal fibrosis and membranes were identified on preoperative optical coherence tomography. The patient underwent successful vitrectomy with peeling of the membranes resulting in markedly improved visual acuity.
Conclusion:
Widely available spectral domain optical coherence tomography can be used preoperatively to image the midperipheral retina and guide surgical decision-making in the management of proliferative vitreoretinopathy.
