Higher Life's Essential 8 (LE8) scores are linked to a reduced risk of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). This study demonstrates that improving cardiovascular health through LE8 positively impacts renal health in diabetes patients.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Health
- Nephrology
- Endocrinology
Background:
- Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a prevalent complication of diabetes, complicating management.
- No prior prospective studies have investigated the association between Life's Essential 8 (LE8) and DKD risk.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the association between Life's Essential 8 (LE8) scores and the risk of developing diabetic kidney disease (DKD).
Main Methods:
- Longitudinal and trajectory analyses included 7605 and 4688 participants, respectively, from 2006-2020.
- LE8 scores, based on 8 health metrics (4 behaviors, 4 factors), were assessed. DKD was confirmed via follow-up data.
- Latent mixture models classified LE8 trajectories, and Cox models with restricted cubic splines analyzed associations.
Main Results:
- DKD incidence decreased as LE8 scores increased (P-trend<0.05).
- The highest tertile of LE8 scores showed reduced DKD risk (HR 0.77, 0.70) compared to the lowest tertile.
- A stable-high LE8 pattern significantly lowered DKD risk (HR 0.53) versus a stable-low pattern.
Conclusions:
- Life's Essential 8 (LE8) is a valuable indicator for cardiovascular health.
- Elevated LE8 scores demonstrate a protective effect on renal health in individuals with diabetes.
- Improving overall cardiovascular health via LE8 contributes to mitigating diabetic kidney disease risk.
