Ocular toxoplasmosis in elderly patients can present with high interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels and an IL-10/IL-6 ratio greater than 1, mimicking ocular lymphoma. This study identified four such cases, suggesting a link between ocular toxoplasmosis and elevated aqueous humor cytokines.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Immunology
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Ocular toxoplasmosis and ocular lymphoma are common causes of uveitis in elderly individuals.
- Distinguishing between these conditions is crucial for appropriate treatment.
- Elevated interleukin-10 (IL-10) and an IL-10/IL-6 ratio > 1 are indicative of ocular lymphoma.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the cytokine profiles in elderly patients diagnosed with ocular toxoplasmosis.
- To determine if ocular toxoplasmosis can present with cytokine levels similar to those seen in ocular lymphoma.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of aqueous humor samples from patients with suspected uveitis.
- Measurement of interleukin-10 (IL-10) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels.
- Differential diagnosis based on clinical presentation and laboratory findings.
Main Results:
- Four cases of ocular toxoplasmosis were identified in elderly patients.
- These patients exhibited high levels of IL-10 and an IL-10/IL-6 ratio > 1.
- These cytokine profiles are typically associated with ocular lymphoma.
Conclusions:
- Ocular toxoplasmosis in the elderly can be associated with elevated aqueous humor IL-10 levels and an IL-10/IL-6 ratio > 1.
- This cytokine profile may lead to misdiagnosis, initially suggesting ocular lymphoma.
- Increased cytokine levels in aqueous humor should be considered in the differential diagnosis of uveitis in older adults.
