Microscopic colitis patients unresponsive to standard treatments may benefit from teduglutide, a GLP-2 analog. This case report highlights significant symptom improvement in a patient with microscopic colitis treated with teduglutide.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Microscopic colitis is a chronic inflammatory colon condition causing watery diarrhea, diagnosed via biopsy.
- Some severe cases resist conventional therapies.
Observation:
- A patient with refractory microscopic colitis was treated with teduglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) analog.
- Teduglutide is approved for short bowel syndrome (SBS) requiring parenteral support.
Findings:
- The patient experienced significant improvement in microscopic colitis symptoms after teduglutide treatment.
- This suggests a potential novel therapeutic application for teduglutide.
Implications:
- Teduglutide may offer a new treatment option for refractory microscopic colitis.
- Further research is warranted to explore GLP-2 analogs in inflammatory bowel diseases.
