    Summary

Therapeutic ultrasound effectively lowers intraocular pressure (IOP) in refractory glaucoma patients. One year after treatment, 70% of patients achieved an IOP of 25 mm Hg or less, demonstrating its therapeutic potential.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Medical Ultrasound
    • Glaucoma Research

    Background:

    • Therapeutic ultrasound is increasingly used in ophthalmology.
    • Refractory glaucoma presents a significant treatment challenge.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe a new therapeutic ultrasound technique for glaucoma.
    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ultrasound therapy for lowering intraocular pressure (IOP).

    Main Methods:

    • Histologic changes were examined in experimental animals.
    • Intraocular pressure (IOP) outcomes were analyzed in 187 treated patient eyes.
    • Complications and visual acuity changes were reviewed.

    Main Results:

    • Ultrasound therapy demonstrated a significant reduction in IOP.
    • 70% of treated patients achieved an IOP of 25 mm Hg or less one year post-therapy.
    • The study details the mode of action and presents histologic findings.

    Conclusions:

    • Therapeutic ultrasound is a viable treatment option for refractory glaucoma.
    • The technique shows promise for long-term IOP management.
    • Further research into ultrasound's mechanism in ophthalmology is warranted.
