Case Report: Paraneoplastic psoriasis in thymic carcinoma

Background:

• Thymic carcinoma is a rare and aggressive malignancy of the anterior mediastinum.
• Paraneoplastic syndromes are common in thymomas but rare in thymic carcinomas.
• Psoriasis vulgaris, an acanthotic disease, is an infrequent paraneoplastic phenomenon.

Observation:

• A 36-year-old patient presented with progressive thymic carcinoma (undifferentiated carcinoma, T3N2M1a).
• The patient developed paraneoplastic psoriasis ten months prior to the carcinoma diagnosis.
• New psoriatic flares correlated with carcinoma relapse or progression.

Findings:

• This is the first reported case of paraneoplastic psoriasis associated with thymic carcinoma.
• The findings suggest a potential link between thymic carcinoma and psoriasis vulgaris as a paraneoplastic syndrome.

Implications:

• This case expands the spectrum of known paraneoplastic syndromes associated with thymic malignancies.
• Monitoring for psoriasis may be relevant in patients with thymic carcinoma.
