Prolonged sitting, common in IT professionals, is a new risk factor for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE), also called e-thrombosis. This case study highlights the dangers of sedentary work styles.
Area of Science:
- Medicine
- Occupational Health
- Vascular Medicine
Background:
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) have established risk factors.
- Prolonged sitting due to occupational demands is an emerging risk factor.
- The COVID-19 pandemic and remote work policies exacerbated sedentary behaviors, particularly in IT professionals.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review a case of sudden death in an IT professional due to DVT and PTE.
- To investigate the association between prolonged sitting and thromboembolic events.
- To discuss clinical presentation, autopsy findings, and preventive strategies for prolonged seated immobility thromboembolism.
Main Methods:
- Case report of an IT professional with fatal DVT and PTE.
- Literature review on prolonged sitting as a risk factor for thromboembolism.
- Analysis of clinical, pathological, and preventive aspects of sedentary work-related thrombosis.
Main Results:
- A case of sudden death linked to DVT and PTE in an IT professional was documented.
- Evidence suggests a significant association between extended sitting hours and the development of DVT and PTE.
- This condition is termed 'e-thrombosis' or prolonged seated immobility thromboembolic syndrome.
Conclusions:
- Prolonged seated immobility, especially in sedentary occupations like IT, poses a significant risk for DVT and PTE.
- Awareness and preventive measures are crucial for individuals with prolonged sitting work styles.
- Further research into 'e-thrombosis' and its management is warranted.
