Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of implementing e-prescription cancellation messaging (CancelRx) on medication dispensing after e-prescription discontinuation within an EHR system.

Main Methods:

  • A case series with interrupted time series analysis was conducted, including patients with e-prescriptions in ambulatory care from January 2018 to December 2019.
  • The study analyzed 53,298 discontinued e-prescriptions for 17,451 patients before and after the implementation of CancelRx.
  • The primary outcome measured was the proportion of e-prescriptions dispensed within 6 months after discontinuation in the EHR.

Main Results:

  • Widespread adoption of CancelRx has the potential to significantly enhance medication safety by minimizing the dispensing of discontinued medications.
  • This intervention offers a promising strategy to reduce medication errors and improve patient outcomes by ensuring timely cancellation of e-prescriptions.
