Background:

  • Comprehensive silent reading, mirroring real-life conditions, is better assessed using multi-sentence passages.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare eye movement-based silent reading performance between standardized short sentences and paragraphs.

Main Methods:

  • 15 young volunteers silently read paragraphs and short sentences.
  • Eye movements were recorded using video oculography (EyeLink II).
  • Reading speed, fixation duration, saccades, regressions, and fixation distributions were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Paragraphs demonstrated superior repeatability for reading speed (66 wpm) and eye movement parameters (fixation duration, regressions) compared to short sentences.
  • Statistically significant improvements were observed with paragraphs in average fixation duration and regressions.
  • No significant difference in average reading speed was found between paragraphs and short sentences.

Conclusions:

  • Paragraphs are preferable to short sentences for evaluating silent comprehensive reading due to superior repeatability.
  • Integrating eye movement analysis in silent reading assessments enhances reliability and may serve as a biomarker for visuo-motor function.
